I find that checklists are useful for quickly assessing student comprehension and for freeing the mind. The link below shows a checklist that I completed during a math class. Please note that this information is purely formative and plays no part in final grades.
During one of my internships, my cooperating teacher had students evaluate their view on how well they were doing in school and what subjects they liked. This information was then shown at the PTA along with the students’ report card. It was very interesting for both parents and teachers to see what students thought of their work. I definitely plan to use this idea in my future classroom.
I am a big fan of peer editing since it allows students to help each other grow without having to worry about grades. I also like to look over the first paragraph of student and have them edit their work work before they send it in for a grade.
